WoGE #206 update

There has been little activity on the guessing front for the WoGE 206 posting. I don't want WoGE to stagnate and for people to lose interest so I am taking the liberty to post an update to the post hosted for Simon (I hope you don't mind Simon). Simon's original posting is in the centre of this image.

  1. I've found the location, but don't know muchz about the geology yet. :-(

Its the mountain Tron, or Tronden, or Tronfjell at

    62° 10' 26" N
    10° 43' 21" E

From the few descriptions I managed to find, the Tronfjell Massif is a mafic pluton where historically talc has been mined and chromite can be found.

This free-standing mountain nicely overlooks the surroundings. Therefore, a broadcast antenna has been built on the summit. The access road is visible in Simon's picture.

  2. Well done effjot!

Here is Simon's description of the area. You were pretty much spot-on with your description.

    From Simon:

"A mountain called Tronfjell in Norway, made up entirely of a layeredgabbro intrusion sitting within the Norwegian Caledonides. The intrusion has a bowl-like shape with the centre of the bowlcorresponding the to mountain's 1666m high peak. You can get somesense of the internal structure around the summit area (the roughconcentric circles). The intrusion has an internal stratigraphy but ismostly made of olivine gabbro, with layers of dunite with chromite. Gabbro is very tough (I wore out a pair of boots mapping Tronfjell onesummer) and this is no doubt why it sits as such as striking mountain, with the road visible snaking up to the TV mast at the summit. At 62degrees north and such an altitude, the summit of Tronfjell isaffected by permafrost.Top far-right you can see evidence of the country-rock, foldedmetasediments. Tronfjell contains evidence of multiple phases ofdeformation and metamorphism within these rocks, but was itself such astrong and non-reactive lump that it was largely unaffected by thelater phase.Gabbro has a distinctive colour, check out Fongen, another gabbro hilla bit further north."

Effjot, WoGE #207 is all yours. Please post a notice here to direct peopleto the #207 location.

  3. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

My WoGE should be online tomorrow (i.e. Sunday) afternoon. I'll post another comment here when it's ready.
